Finding the right home is more than just having a place to live. It’s about feeling safe, developing independence, being part of the community and having the right support to live comfortably. Housing needs can change over time based on a person's goals, health, and daily routine for people living with disabilities.

Everyone’s journey is different and Triniti Care understands that. Picking the right disability housing is a key step to living a comfortable and satisfying life. If you are eligible for the NDIS there are three types of housing you can choose from: Supported Independent Living (SIL), Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and Medium Term Accommodation (MTA).

Below are the different options and when they may be appropriate.

The Importance of SIL: Support for Everyday Independence

NDIS-eligible participants who need regular assistance with everyday activities are eligible to participate in Supported Independent Living (SIL). The activities may involve personal care, preparation of food, cleaning, managing daily activities, and independent living skills.

For those who desire a more independent lifestyle and need assistance, SIL accommodation may be a good option. According to individual arrangements, a participant can either live alone or in shared accommodation with others.

We understand that everyone has their own view on independent living here at Triniti Care. So SIL is more about empowering people with choice and support and encouraging them to be part of everyday life.

Understanding SDA: A Home Designed Around Accessibility

Disabled individuals often require homes with special features that facilitate mobility, security, and daily routines. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) can help here.

DA housingS under the NDIS refers to accommodation that is specially designed or modified for eligible participants who have significant functional impairment or extreme support needs. The home may feature wider doorways, accessible bathrooms, easier circulation, or any technology required as needed by the individual.

What Is MTA? Transitional Housing During a Time of Transition

Life doesn’t always go as planned. Sometimes people need somewhere to stay in the short term, while waiting for their permanent home to come up, during a time of transition or while permanent accommodation is arranged.

MTA accommodation provides temporary housing for eligible NDIS participants during a transition period. NDIS arrangements typically include MTA funding for up to 90 days’ accommodation if the participant meets the relevant eligibility criteria.

For example, a participant may need temporary housing after they leave the hospital while their permanent accessible home is being built. Someone else may need a temporary living solution until a suitable SDA comes on the market.

Triniticare understands how unsettling moving can be. Housing options that are short-term can help participants remain stable while they work toward a longer-term solution.

Housing provided through MTA  is not a long-term solution or a replacement for permanent housing. Depending on financial approval and eligibility for the NDIS, this is a short-term solution.

How Housing Needs May Vary Over Time

The process of meeting an individual's housing needs may include different kinds of support throughout different phases of life.

If someone is learning to live independently, SIL could offer the support they need to build confidence. SDA housing is more accessible for persons with disabilities. In the event of relocation, MTA could be a temporary measure until other arrangements are made.

Each participant's situation is unique, and their eligibility, needs, and choices determine which option is ideal for them. The aforementioned is merely a potential development.

It is essential to regularly evaluate one's housing demands. It may be necessary to alter the current configuration due to changes in one's mobility or other circumstances.

Participants in the NDIS disability housing support will be assisted in weighing their alternatives.
